Guam. USA. The monument to the Doberman Pinschers that served in the Pacific during the World War II. The plaque in Guam reads : Twenty-five Marine War Dogs gave their lives liberating Guam in 1944. They served as sentries, messengers, and scouts. They explored caves, and detected mines and booby traps. Given in their memory and on behalf of the surviving men of the 2nd and 3rd Marine War Dog Platoons, many of whom owe their lives to the bravery and sacrifice of these gallant animals.

Simon's Town. South Africa. The only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. Nuisance was a Great Dane who from 1939-44 served at HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy shore establishment in Simon's Town, South Africa. He died in 1944 and was buried with full military honours.

St. Bernard born in Honningsvåg, Norway, used to sail with his owner Captain Erling Hafto on the whale catcher Thorodd, converted to a minesweeper during World War ll after being drafted into the Royal Norwegian Navy. Considered a crew member and always donning a sailor's cap (or a special metal helmet, when on sentry duty on the front gun tower), Bamse ("teddy bear") became a symbol of freedom against Nazism.
