DogDenver. Colorado. USA. The sculpture is in front of the new Denver Animal Shelter facility. | BumSan Diego. California. USA. The dog arrived in San Diego as a stowaway in the steamship Santa Rosa, and chose the city as his home. "Loved by everyone, owned by no one", Bum used to pay visits to restaurants in order to get his meals ("quality food"!), and when was young, fought another dog with disastrous results: lost a foreleg and part of his tail. Nevertheless, he went on being a friendly and happy dog, becoming so popular that the city proclamed him the Official Town Dog. | Dirty BiterLa Conner. Washington. USA. Cranky mutt, but beloved by all people of La Conner, Washington. Had a comical face because of a broken jaw he got when he was a puppy. Used to go to the 1890's Tavern, where a bar stool was always reserved for him. Died in 1982, after fighting another dog. In his honor, a park named after him was created; his statue sits on a metal bench next to his favorite hang-out. |

HaraweneRotorua. New Zealand. Harawene was a mongrel terrier-mix that wandered for 15 years by Te Nga road in New Zealand. She never allowed anybody to get closer (she used to run away when people tried to approach her), but many people cared for her, offering fresh water, food and shelter. | PippoTorre del Lago. Tuscany. Italy. In 1977, Pippo appeared in Torre del Lago Puccini with a deep wound of fire weapon on the back and was adopted by the inhabitants; he lived there for about 20 years, and was loved by everyone. | Sorriso - "Smile"Balneário Camboriú. Santa Catarina. Brazil. A dog who wandered, in the 90's, in the streets of Balneário Camboriú, a major beach resort in the Brazilian southern state of Santa Catarina. He had many friends — those from Kananga Restaurant use to give him meals every day. In the 90's, he ran for Congress/Chamber of Deputies, obtaining almost 1000 votes! Unfortunately, Sorriso ended up being run over in a busy avenue — by a driver who knew him and was his friend. |
